Pathfinders 4-H Club... Preparing Tomorrow's Leaders Today

In a 4-H club there are leadership positions taken by youth club members. The top 4 include president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. The secretary takes notes, and keeps track of all the decisions made. The vice president has to be ready to take charge anytime the president is absent. The treasurer must carefully keep track of the money. The president is in charge of running the business meetings. I am now starting my second year as club president. This requires me to learn to take charge and fulfill more responsibilities. Because I am often the one speaking to the crowd I have learned how important it is to pay attention and take part in discussions at times when I’m the one being spoken to. This is only one example of leadership taught in 4-H.

Pathfinders 4-H Club Lends a Helping Hand...

On Wednesday, September 21, my 4-H club took a tour of Historic Polegreen Church. We learned about Patrick Henry’s childhood and how he stood up for freedom. Historic Polegreen Church was affected by the hurricane that came to the east coast, so we helped pick up limbs and sticks that were grinded up to make mulch. It was nice to help Historic Polegreen Church after all the work that the people who built and maintain this site have done to keep this history alive.

4-H Helps the Homeless

One way Pathfinders has given back to the community is by putting useful items for homeless people in bags. We hand these bags out of our car windows to men and women on street corners. These bags include McDonald’s certificates, bottled water, rain ponchos, tissues, razors, and other things including encouraging notes. Most of the people have been grateful, although some have just stood and stared. This is a fun project. It has taught us there are a lot of homeless people we don’t see. It also has taught us to think about the needs of others.

The 4-H Pathfinders club went to Samaritan House of Ministries on Wednesday October 5, 2011.Mrs. Sharon Ellet met us and she led us in a tour of the facilities. In the tour, we saw, the gym, the men and women’s house, the kitchen, the administrative offices and the academy. At the Commonwealth Christian Academy, we met the principal, toured the school, and helped organize their library and merit store. They provide services to the homeless, the unemployed, and the drug abused. They are a Christian Mission that demonstrates God’s love. They help these people with drug withdrawal and accepting personal responsibility. They also help with work training where participants learn essential life skills like accepting authority and getting along with other people as well as specific job skills. They help change attitudes and focus toward God.

Virginia youth are hot for 4-H State Congress, June 20-23

BLACKSBURG, Va., June 6, 2011 – More than 500 teens, volunteer leaders, and Virginia Cooperative Extension agents will attend the 91st annual 4-H State Congress at Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus from June 20 to 23.

This year’s theme, “4-H on Fire: This Is Why We’re Hot,” will allow teens to show their passion for the leadership, citizenship, and life skills they learn through 4-H.

As Extension’s youth development service, Virginia 4-H engages youth ages 5 to 19 in hands-on educational programs and activities designed to help them gain the knowledge, life skills, and attitudes needed to further their development as self-directing, contributing, productive members of society. Contact your local Extension office for more information about 4-H State Congress and other Virginia 4-H events in your area.

Cynthia Kinser, the first woman to serve as chief justice of the Virginia Supreme Court and a former 4-H’er, will share words of wisdom about civic engagement during the opening assembly. Author, coach, and renowned motivational speaker J. Thurman will also empower 4-H delegates to maximize their potential at an evening assembly on the first day.

During the event, 4-H delegates will participate in fun and educational workshops that cover animal science, communications and expressive arts, healthy living, environmental education, and technology and engineering. Whether 4-H’ers are learning about the history and care of alpacas, discovering the art of ballroom dancing, receiving first aid training and certification, finding out the basics of beekeeping, or building LEGO robots, they will have plenty of opportunities to show off their skills and expand their horizons.

New in 2011, the State 4-H Cabinet is sponsoring a service project to support Heifer International, an Arkansas-based nonprofit dedicated to relieving global hunger and poverty. The Bills for Beef campaign will allow 4-H members across the commonwealth to support Heifer International’s work to provide gifts of livestock, plants, and education on sustainable agriculture to financially disadvantaged families around the world. The 4-H State Cabinet has asked each delegate to raise at least $5 to support this effort.

Virginia 4-H will also continue the Congress Heroes program. Through this initiative, youth share information with corporate and private partners to help generate funds to support Virginia 4-H and to provide an avenue for 4-H’ers to have their congress registration fee sponsored.

The 2011 4-H State Congress will also give participants a chance to compete for awards in dozens of areas, with the winners advancing to regional and national contests. There will also be dances, sporting events, and a banquet.

As always, 4-H delegates will experience what life might be like as a Virginia Tech student. In addition, Virginia Tech representatives will answer questions and promote their programs at a career and college expo. Other colleges, universities, and technical schools in Virginia have been invited to participate.

Virginia Cooperative Extension brings the resources of Virginia's land-grant universities, Virginia Tech and Virginia State University, to the people of the commonwealth. Through a system of on-campus specialists and locally based educators, it delivers education in the areas of agriculture and natural resources, family and consumer sciences, community viability, and 4-H youth development. With a network of faculty at two universities, 106 county and city offices, 12 agricultural research and Extension centers, and six 4-H educational centers, Virginia Cooperative Extension provides solutions to the problems facing Virginians today.

2011 Art Workshop

4-Hers gathered for our first annual 4-H Fun with Art workshop @ Dorey Park. This workshop presented 4-Hers with an opportunity to tap into their artistic talents while enjoying each others company. Each of the members added their own individual touch to what turned out to be a great piece of art work. This worked proved that everyone may not be an award winning artist, but everyone has the ability to be creative and work together towards being the best they can be.

Pathfinders 4-H Club "Work Day @ Bell Isle" & End of the Year Picnic

Work Day At Bell Isle

My 4H club went to Bell Isle recently to do a service project. It took us a long time to get started for several reasons. First we thought we were supposed to go to Browns Island, but that just didn’t make sense. After we made a phone call to Ralf White who was leading the project, we finally got headed in the right direction. Elliot, Caleb and I ran ahead to meet Mr. White, however the rest of the group got lost and went the wrong way. Mr. White showed us what we were going to be doing that day, After getting a phone call from my mom saying they went the wrong way we decided to get started.

What we were doing was painting over graffiti, cleaning up trash and clearing out debris in and around the old hydro electric plant. When the rest of the club finally found us, Mr. White gave a talk about the history of Bell Isle and the hydro electric plant. Then I told every one what we were doing, and every one got to work.

My job was painting, none of us really wanted to paint over this one nice piece of graffiti. So Mr. White gave a talk about how even if we liked some of the graffiti, it still didn’t belong there. He had a good point about how it could encourage more people to write things, and that eventually things would get offensive and inappropriate. It was fun day and I’m really glade some one was selling drinks on the side walk on the way back.

Work day at Belle Isle

On Wednesday April 6, my 4-H club went to Belle Isle to do community service. We met with Ralph White and he showed us what needed to be done. Some of us painted over graffiti, others picked up trash and glass and the rest shoveled dirt and trash out of a building. I was in the group that shoveled.

One thing that I thought was really cool about that day was when Mr. Ralph came in the building, stopped us all and talked to us. He said that when people graffiti, they are showing their emotions. He says that it’s fine when we have a symbol and put it on our car or house or even our skin, but he does not want us to put it on his car or his house or his skin because that is his private property. He said that when people put graffiti on a building in a park, that is not just their property, it is everyone’s property and they do not have the right to ruin it.

He also said that even though we repaint it, they are just going to come back and re graffiti all over again. He said that it may not seem worth it to repaint and repaint it, but he said that it’s like dirty clothes. When they get dirty we wash them. Even when they keep getting dirty and dirty we don’t give up on them and throw them away. We wash them again. When he said that what was going through my mind was that we may mess up in our lives big time, but we need to get right back up and keep going. Just because we messed up doesn’t mean we need to throw our whole bodies away. We need to come back and ask God to help us and keep living in him.

End of the Year Picnic

Pathfinders had their annual End of Year Picnic at Three Lakes Park recently. Mitchell Halenda coordinated our time and acted as the Grillmaster! The Ellises brought their newly hatched chicks for everyone to enjoy. Some folks fished, others hiked or played catch and a bunch simply hung out socializing. It was a beautiful day!

2011 Virginia LifeSmarts Competition

LifeSmarts,...the ultimate consumer challenge," is a quiz bowl competition which tests the knowledge of high school students on important consumer information in an entertaining way, and rewards them for this knowledge. Students from all over the state took their places at the Federal Reserve in Richmond, VA competing for a chance to represent Virginia in the National LifeSmarts Competition held in Los Angles, California April 30 - May 2, 2011. Henrico County 4-H was represented by Henrico 4-H WYSIWYG coached by Karie Dawkins. We are very proud of the team's hard work and effort, and there 3rd place finish. Kicking It with DNA Fitness

On Tuesday March 1, 2010 Henrico 4-H participated in it's first "Kicking It w/ Kickboxing" Workshop. This workshop gave 4-H members an opportunity to learn about the exciting world of kick boxing and basic self defense. Members of DNA Fitness came by and taught the kids some basic kick boxing moves, and explained the importance of being aware at all times. February Workshop: Speak UP, Speak OUT!

The “Speak Up, Speak Out” workshop will be Tuesday, February 1^st at Dorey Park on Darbytown Rd from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. This workshop will help prepare 4-H members how to organize their thoughts and improve their delivery of a dynamic public speech (or demonstration). This will be a big help for those who plan on participating at the Henrico 4-H Presentation Contest on February 19^th.

There will also be a 4-H Leaders Meeting taking place at the same time.

Holiday Wishes and Happy New from the Varina Rising Stars!

Thanksgiving is a holiday to come together with your family and to sit down and give thanks to your choosing. The Varina Rising Stars came together on November 9th at their monthly meeting to give thanks to the people over seas who ultimately give their life so we can have the freedom we have now. We helped show our gratitude by making and sending cards to the soldiers over seas. We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

About once a year family, friends, and enemies gather around to celebrate in what they believe in. It could be Christmas, Hanukka, Kwanzaa, the New Year, or anything else they choose. This past 2010 Holiday season my 4-H family came together on November 24th at Hardy Central Baptist Church to pack one hundred and twenty-seven shoe boxes. These shoe boxes were filled with all sorts of things from tooth-paste, tooth-brushes, Bibles, candy, school supplies, stuffed animals, hair products, and miscellaneous toys. With the help of donations from the church, we were able to ship these shoe boxes to children in third world countries. We believe with good heart that each shoe box went to the proper child needing it. The Varina Rising Stars have been shipping shoe boxes for as long as I have been in the 4-H club and even longer, over 9 years. Not only is this a good time to think of others in their time of need, but it was a great time to interact with my fellow 4-Hers. This is one of the community services projects we do, and it helps members understand others needs.

On December 14th, 2010 Varina Rising Stars conducted their last meeting to conclude the 2010 year. In this meeting we had a Pajama party, holiday party, and stocking stuffing combination. The Varina Rising Stars have their meetings at 7:00 p.m., second Tuesday of each month at Dorey Park located in the Barn. So, this meeting I proposed that we had a Pajama meeting, and needless to say we had a wonderful turnout! At our last meeting of the year we always have out Holiday Party. We eat, play games, and socialize. Like every December right directly after I read the Newsletter, we focus on stuffing stocking for the children in St. Josephs Villa. We have decided to give to these children because many of them are living there with their mothers. Their circumstances cary but they will have little for Christmas. So, we collect items such as school supplies, small toys, candy, gloves, hats, and personal items such as toothpaste, shampoo, brushes, ect. We pack these stockings or cloth Christmas bags (that is what we used this year) and label them boy or girl and put the ages of 2-5, 6-10, 11-18. We had enough items to fill 135 Christmas bags.We also took 2 bags of clothes, 2 large boxes of large toys that we could not fit into a Christmas bag. Our members and leaders really enjoy (as you can see from the pictures) the camaraderie of working together on this project and feel good about what we do. We thank everyone who helps donate items and contribute to the stocking stuffing. The Varina Rising Stars would like to say; Best wishes to all, and hope everyone had a wonderful New Year!

2011 Share the Fun Talent Show. The actual show will be held Friday, January 28^th beginning at 6:30pm. Please remember acts must be there no later than 6:15pm. There are six Share the Fun categories: Vocal, Instrumental, Dance, Drama, Variety and Combination. There will be a Dress Rehearsal on Tuesday, January 18^th from 6:30 – 8:00pm at the Henrico Theater. We look forward to having a great show in 2011!

Chesterfield County youths are invited to design a t-shirt for Dodge Pressure & DARE 2B U. Registration and design submission deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 21, 2010, to Beth Clements at Youth Planning and Development, P.O. Box 40 • 9700 Krause Road, Chesterfield, VA 23832. During the dodgeball preliminaries and tournament, through art, teens will educate their peers on

how to stay strong when faced with difficult choices surrounding substance abuse through the 40 Developmental Assets. The 40 Developmental Assets are skills, opportunities, relationships and values that promote positive behaviors in our youths.

We want teens to be inspired to design a t-shirt that demonstrates a movement toward choosing healthy behaviors. The theme of the dodgeball tournament is Dodge Pressure & DARE 2B U.

4-H Community Service - Operation Military Kids - Hero Packs

Students with Henrico Prevention Services Oakland Village CONNECT and John Rolfe Middle School joined Henrico 4-H to complete a community service project with Operation Military Kids (OMK). OMK is the U.S. Army's collaborative effort with Virginia's communities to support children and youth impacted by deployments. These children and youth across the state of Virginia face unique stressors due to the deployment of parents. The students put together "Hero Packs" for youth across the state as a "thank you" for the sacrifices they make while their parents are deployed. The Pack, which is distributed based on availability, is filled with items intended to provide children with fun activities and ways to stay connected to their deployed parent(s).

November 7, the East End Shooters (Henrico's Shooting Sports project area) spent a few hours out at Black Creek Gun range working on their shotgun skills. 2010 Operation Drumstick!

Monday, November 22 was "D-Day" for the Pathfinder 4-H club. D stands for "Drumstick" and the club packed up 66 pairs of drumsticks attached to large turkeys for area families in need. Every year, Pathfinders raises money, collects food and boxes up turkeys and all the trimmings for Thanksgiving meals. Half to two thirds of the boxes go to Good Samaritan Ministries to be distributed. Other boxes are distributed through the club members' connections. On this most recent D-Day, members inventoried food, made shopping lists, filled shopping carts with piles of food, filled decorated boxes and loaded them into vans to be sent on their way. When all that was done, they cleaned up the mess and went home to put their feet up, happy with a job well done!

Members cleared a space of non-native, invasive plants(Japanese Honeysuckle) with plans to plant native Virginia Bluebells in the cleared area; painted trash receptacles; and spread mulch. Over 25 members plus moms and younger siblings joined in our effort to keep the James River a place for all to enjoy.

Last week was a BLAST! Not only did Henrico 4-Her's come out in full force to celebrate National 4-H week, but many new members learned a little more about the importance of water quality. A special thanks to Rolfe Middle School, Henrico Prevention Services Connect Program (Oakland Village and Newbridge), Shady Grove YMCA, and Henrico PAL's Afterschool program for participating in this years National Youth Science Day experiment 4-H20. Remember, it's never too late to lend a helping hand in saving our environment. here's a few pictures from the week... ENJOY!

October Workshop: NYSD

Tuesday night we all joined together for our month workshop and leader's meeting. This was kick event for the 2010-2011 4-H year, and it just happens to be in the middle of National 4-H week! I had a BLAST, and I think I can speak for everyone else who was involved. The kids participated in the NYSD experiment: 4H20. We discussed the importance of water quality, and ways everyone can take part in protecting the environment. We ended the night by making "4-H Parfaits" and enjoying each other's company. Thanks everyone for starting the year off right, and I can't wait to see you all again at November's Workshop: Healthy Snacks!

TODAY IS NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE DAY!

Today youth begin the experiment through conducting a simple activity to understand how people increase the amount of CO2 building up in the atmosphere. Using a bromothymol blue
indicator solution (BMB), youth blow into a BMB/water mixture to demonstrate the concept
of CO2 gas and students can visually see how CO2 levels can build-up in water by seeing
how the indicator changes colors.

By the end of the activity, students will:
• Learn through experimentation, the effect of CO2 levels on water quality.
• Calculate the amount of CO2 a family contributes to the atmosphere to better understand
the human impact of the carbon footprint.
• Understand the key characteristics used to observe water quality, such as color, odor, and
the presence of aquatic plants and animals.
• Understand the impacts of CO2 and nutrient runoff on the over-growth of algae in lakes,
leading to changes in water quality.
• Engage in a discussion about water quality and global climate change.

Apples, Peanuts, Honey!

The annual Henrico 4-H Apple, Peanut, and Honey Fundraiser is now underway! The Virginia produce being sold will generate funds to support local 4-H youth programs.

You may choose between two varieties of apples: Winesap and York. Both of these varieties are excellent eating apples, may be cooked, and keep well. The apples are being sold at $15.00 per half-bushel—that’s only 71¢ per pound! Peanuts may be purchased raw or as deluxe cocktail (salted or unsalted). They are sold in two-pound cotton sacks embossed with the 4-H clover and motto. Raw peanuts are $8.00 per sack. Salted and unsalted deluxe cocktail peanuts are $11.00 per sack. Recipes are provided with the raw nuts. Honey will be sold in one pound jars for $5.50. Acceptable forms of payment are check or money order made out to “Henrico 4-H Fund.” Distribution will take place at the Western Government Center on November 2^nd from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on November 3^rd from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Order forms may be picked up at the Extension Office or any Henrico County Library. They may also be printed from our website at: http://www.co.henrico.va.us/extension . It is anticipated that all orders received by October 15^th will be honored. Orders received after that date will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Food and Fitness @ Newbridge Summer CONNECT Program

Henrico County 4-H and Henrico Prevention Services partnered for a six week "Food and Fitness" series with the participants of the Newbridge Summer Connect program located @ Newbridge Middle School. The students discussed topics including proper handing, maintaining an active lifestyle, healthy food choices, developing positive relationships with their peers. At the conclusion of the series the students were asked to share what they learned or enjoyed while participating in each session. Here's what a few of them said...

We had a lot of fun with Mr. Reggie. We also learned a lot of useful information that will help us later in life. Some of the activities we did included learning how to wash our hands properly, making smoothies, and "walking salads." For the washing hands activity Mr. Reggie put orange glo on everyone's hands. he has them wash with different kids of soap for 20 seconds. When everyone was done he used a black light to show who soap washed the best and which one was the worse. We really enjoyed Mr. Reggie and will keep in mind what he has taught us.

Today I learned about nutrition and calcium. I learned that you need to eat more than one vegetables and fruit. Also, you can get vitamin A and vitamin C from milk and eggs. You can get whole grain from cereal, crackers, peanut butter, pasta, and rice. All of these things are healthy foods to eat!!!

Summer Babysitting Workshops

Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Henrico Public Library teamed up to provide a series of babysitting workshops at five local library branches this summer. Students of all ages learned new skills including usage of age appropriate toys and games, healthy snacks, and the business of babysitting. Each student completed a pre and post test covering the topics discussed during the class; as well as a certificate of completion to be used as a reference for potential clients. Series was led by Kimberly Edmonds, Family and Consumer Science and Kendra Young, 4-H Youth Development.

Operation Frontline: Kids Up Front!

Operation Frontline: Kids Up Front engaged kids ages 8 to 12 in learning about healthy eating and provided simple nutritious recipes that children could prepare themselves. The 5 day camp took place July 26-30, 2010 at Seven Gables Apartment Complex and taught students the importance of a healthy lifestyle including making sound food choices and getting the proper amount of physical activity. Operation Frontline teaches family members skills that will last a lifetime and more as they share them with relatives and friends. This camp was led by Kimberly Edmonds, Extension Agent, Family and Consumer Sciences; and Kendra Young, Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development. Be on the look out for the next session of Operation Frontline: Side By Side; teaching school-age children ages 6 to 12 and their parents together how to join forces in the kitchen!

What does 4-H means to me.

Life of a 4-H agent! Never can tell what's coming around the corner.

As I run around from school to school, kids always ask me the same question... "Mr. Reggie, what is 4-H?" It throws me for a loop every time, but I guess 4-H is something that everyone doesn't know about. Well here's my definition of what 4-H means to me. As a child, 4-H was my third parent. My mom enrolled me and my brother in every day camp, every contest, took me to every horse show, every dog show, and summer wasn't summer unless I spent one week @ Jamestown 4-H Center. BTW... my mom was the local 4-H agent, so I guess the clover is stamped on my heart. However it was the responsibility, self confidence, and countless other life skills taught through 4-H that has meant the most to me. 4-H is a great way to prepare for life. The same skills I use now to create and administer after school programming, are the same skills I developed and nurtured while teaching judges to make "PlayDough" @ the county presentation contest in 5th grade. Like play dough, 4-H can be molded and shaped into anything you can imagine. I LOVE THAT! The world is made up of billions of people, with no one person alike. So why not create something special just for you and your friends. Not only to have fun but learn along the way. 4-H only takes YOU, some friends, and an willing adult to get started. From that point the skies your only limit. 4-H is you, 4-H is me, 4-H brings our head, heart, hands, health all together. That's what 4-H means to me, what does it mean to you?
